Are some definition that Nicola Gardini (poet, novelist, critic, painter, professor of comparative literature at Oxford and, in fact, translator) gives this art neglected, poorly paid, contested, which is a translation. Art in itself very humble, because it puts the muted personal voice of him who acts instead giving voice to something else

(“La traduzione è un bacio. / E’ avere nella bocca / Non una, ma due lingue / Contemporaneamente”)

together and separately presumptuous, since it presumes to interpret styles and feelings that do not belong

(“Tradurre per avere un solo punto / Da cui tenere tutto, / Suddiviso e congiunto. / Ricostruire l’ordine distrutto”).

Gardini wrote hundreds of poems (Translation is a kiss, edited by Giuliano Ladolfi) in the space of a month, the beginning of 2015, pressed by the need to compose a tribute in verse, and in some ways even a pamphlet essay in honor and defense of not only the translation, but also the translator. In the final note he argues his harangue poetic:

Tradurre si fa, è possibile, e va capito nella sua complessità umana, artistica e civile, e nella sua bellezza. Non ci sono, per me, schemi, griglie, ipotesi, ma solo prassi e stupori, e una molteplicità di punti di vista.

Results for love, for knowledge will, in wonder with regard to beauty:

“Io non ho lingua, io sto all’erta, / A bocca aperta, / Come i bambini quando nevica / O come il pesce”;“Non c’è, per quanto scaltra, / Parola sufficiente. / Può vincere sul niente / Se vive per un’altra”.

It translates to fill its empty, to fill the gaps, to enrich themselves emotionally:

“Proprio non so la sete di cui vive / Questo mio cuore vuoto e, come il bruco / Che ha già finito il filo, ecco, traduco”.

And Nicola Gardini has translated much, already adolescence, ancient and contemporary writers, Greek-Latin-German-French and especially Anglo-Saxons, meeting his poets in books and in person, by competing with other translators, proudly claiming the artistic legitimacy the subjective interpretation, defending the refined craftsmanship of his work by academic criticism a puffed. But also offering a playful and light appearance of the translation (as in almost scialojano divertissement "The Man", in which questions the translational capacity of animals). Defending the use of the much-maligned rhyme ("The rhyme first. / Wherever and whatever, / not only in poetry"). And contesting the cliche insulation Translator:

“La gente crede che tradurre / Sia un lavoro solitario:/ Tu e il dizionario. / Ma se è il massimo della compagnia! / Uno che ti insegna a produrre, / Uno che ti fa fare una poesia".

In short, these verses Gardini recite a declaration of love to a thankless and rewarding profession, tough and generous, greedy and delicate, as is evident from this last example:

“Per certi il paradiso è luce, / Per altri leggere da mane a sera.../ Per me la beatitudine vera / E’ un posto dove si traduce”.
